Grand final looming for qualifiers in Castlebar winter league

Balla

Matt Leonard was the winner of the weekend stableford competition in the club last weekend with a score of 38pts. His play on the back nine was enough to keep him in front of PJ Brett in second place with John Parsons taking third on 34pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Breda Cleary with a score of 36pts, it was only her back six scoring that held off Aine McDonald in second, with Breege Jennings taking third with 33pts. The winter league is still in full swing with Catherine McNulty and Martin Moylette in the lead on 391pts. They are being chased in second place by Paraic Cuffe and Breege Moran on 369pts.

Ballinrobe

In last weeks ladies’ competition Marie Burke was the overall winner with a score of 42pts, second place went to Connie Darcy with 37pts, third place was taken by Connie Darcy. The Cat 1 prize went to Maura Joyce on 36pts, Carmel Sweeney took the Cat 2 win and Cat 3 went to Mary Colleran with 25pts.

All competition winners (including daily winners ) should note that the presentation will take place on Sunday, February 26, at 7pm in the clubhouse. If you are unable to attend kindly nominate someone to attend and collect your prize on your behalf.

The ladies’ and gents’ Bunker competition take place this Saturday and Sunday and is a €10 entry. This is a single stableford format and you must be in at least one Bunker during your round to win the competition and the prizes include trailers of timber.

Castlebar

The eighth and final round of the 2011-2012 Winter League, sponsored by Cox's Bars & Restaurants, was played last weekend. While several teams were in the position to not play having secured qualification for the grand final, for most teams it was the last chance to post a score and book their place in the March 11 grand final.

The top-class scoring continued in round eight with the teams of Ian Brennan and Seamus Cuffe both scoring 95 points. Brennan’s team were declared round eight winners after a count-back. For the second week running the team of Seamus Cuffe’s team had to settle for second place.

The teams who qualified from the groups are as follows: Group1: Tony Collins, Roger Towey and Walter Barrett; Group 2: John Mitchell, John Magee and Michael Langan; Group 3: Thomas Ruane, Pat Ryan and John Mulroy; Group 4: Dom Molloy, Seamus Cuffe and Ian Brennan; Group 5: Ian Smith, David Carney and Liam Burke; Group 6: Eamon Smith, Paddy Kilgallon and Mick Byrne; Group 7: Gerry Daly, Jimmy Walsh and Martin Lydon. The six teams who qualified by virtue of the six best remaining scores were: Peter Horkan, Michael Grennan, Shane Quigley, Michael Heneghan, Donal Fitzmaurice and Mark Deely.

Castlebar ladies

The ladies played round seven of the 2012 Spring League, sponsored by Cox's Bars & Restaurant recently. This being the penultimate round teams were anxious to improve their standings in the table. Evelyn Brady's team made a significant jump in the standings since round six to now co-lead the league with Carmel Connaughton's team on a best six from seven scores total of 423 points. Mary Rose McNulty's team are in second place with 417 points while the teams of Lorna Irwin and Marie Rowley are both tied on 415 points.

As mentioned in the team stats, Evelyn Brady's team had the best round seven score of 79 points with Ger Lyon's team were second with 73 points. Mary Rose McNulty's team remain very consistent posting a team score of 72 points.

Competition Results.

Breda Fitzmaurice with a score of 28 points won the 13 hole competition played over the weekend. Two players were tied on the same score of 26 points and after the count-back Bernie Burke was declared second and Eileen O'Boyle third. Marie Rowley was fourth with 25 points. This weekend there is a 15 hole club competition for ladies.

Claremorris

The CBE sponsored rumble competition was claimed by the team of Dermot Costello, Seamus Holian and Conor Holian with a score of 84pts. The single stableford competition was claimed by Pat Coyne on a score of 34pts with Marie Healy winning the ladies’ competition on a score of 22pts.

Mulranny

Liam Walsh was the winner of Sunday’s competition with a score of 33 pts. Paul Gavin continued his recent good form, by finishing runner up on 32 pts. John Moran filled third place on 30pts. Fifteen hole competitions continue for the next three weekends.

Sunday March 18 will see captains Martin McLoughlin and Margie Coughlan drive in the new season, followed by a four ball scramble. The calendar of events for 2012 is now available and will be issued to all paid up members. Beginner golfers, who do not require a handicap, can join Mulranny for a very attractive rate of €150. The open days continue on Fridays with the Golfnet system being used for handicapping purposes.

Westport

Last week’s ladies’ stableford competition was won by Nuala Hopkins with a score of 18pts, with Bernadette Bergin taking second place on 16pts and Colette Fleming third scoring 15pts.
