Conroy puts in strong Amsterdam marathon performance
Ballina native Martin Conroy ran a scorching 2:31:55 in the Amsterdam marathon recently. Training under the watchful eye of ninth placed finisher in the 1984 Olympic marathon, Jerry Kiernan, the ambitious Ballina man was hoping to break the magical 2:30 barrier but finished just outside this target in only his second marathon. Martin runs under the colours of Sligo AC but maintains close links with his former club.
Scott Walkin had run 3:03:03 for the marathon in Berlin in 2010. He had to aim to break the three hour barrier and we are delighted to report that he achieved this comfortably with 2:57:52.
This is testament to his dedicated training and steely determination. Scott does almost all his training in the myriad excellent training routes around Ballina – especially in the Belleek region. Niall Cawley also broke his personal best with a time of 3.10.53 for the distance.
