In the Pat Bree Golfer of the Year competition Ted Walsh Junior was the big winner with a 39 off 19 (back nine ) being enough to put him ahead of Jack Healy who also got 39pts playing off 21. The third hole at Westport is giving up hole-in-ones like “snuff at a wake.” A day after Trevor Nutt aced during the Christian Golfers week, Jack Bredin holed out with his trademark six iron. Playing partner Pat Murphy was heard to comment, at the 19th hole, later in the afternoon: “We got a hole-in-one at the third”.
Next Sunday’s gents’ competition is a Bould Biddies, sponsored, stableford event. Although not a golfer, Breege Kilroy, who runs her premises on Mill Street as one of the premier traditional music venues in Westport, is well represented at Westport Golf Club, by daughter Jenny and son-in-law Sean Durkan. The couple would surely be one of the favourites, if there was a husband and wife stableford competition, played during the year. That’s not a bad idea.
