Early start for golfing insomniacs in Westport

Balla

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Cox’s Bar and Restaurant was won by the duo of Aodan McSuibhnie and Mary B O’Donnell, with John Nally and Burt Eagleton in second place, and Margaret Walsh and Geraldine Kilgallon finishing in third.

Ballina

In the vice-captain’s prize, sponsored by Hastings Insurance, PJ Ruddy was the winner with Joe Murphy in second place and Pat White in third. In the ladies’ 18 hole stableford sponsored by Market Kitchen Josephine O’Hara was the winner on 37pts, with Siobhan Leonard in second place and Ann Cawley in third.

Ballinrobe

It was the President’s Prize last weekend in Ballinrobe and Frank McDonagh was the winner with Dara Jennings finishing in second place, Michael C Burke taking the gross prize, and Cillian Burke claiming third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Pat McDermott, Helen Ryan finished in second place, Catherine Walsh was third, while Shannon Burke won the gross competition.

Castlebar

Thomas Cresham and Gerry Daly were the winners of the Mick O’Malley Road-making sponsored fourball betterball competition last week. Second place went to Michael Thornton and Michael O’Brien, with Kevin Barry and Adrian Rocke taking the third place prize. Breda Gilvarry and Evelyn Duggan were the best ladies on the day, seeing off the challenge of Ger Lyons and Pauline O’Donoghue in second place, and Connie White and Lorna Irwin finishing in third place.

Claremorris

John Gibbons won the Sheridan’s Milltown sponsored competition last weekend, with Declan Hession finishing in second place and Bert Sexton taking the category prize. The junior prize was won by Sean McGuinness, with Peggy Tawse winning the ladies’ eight-hole event

Carne

Damien McGrane is hoping to carry the impressive form he discovered at the Corrib Gas Carne Golf Links Pro-Am into this weekend's Irish Open. McGrane and veteran Phillip Walton shared the €20,000 first prize at the Mayo venue, finishing six clear of the chasing pack.

Mulranny

Tom Mulloy had his first win of the season last weekend when 35pts was sufficient to hold off the challenges of John Joyce and Eugene Patten who both shot 34pts. Mulloy’s win gains him a place on the Mulranny four person team which will represent the club in the 3Ts regional qualifier at Slieve Russell in September. The 3Ts is a fundraiser for the campaign to highlight Suicide Awareness. Next Sunday’s competition is another Golfer of the Year stroke event, which is sponsored by Jack Dylan Jewellers, Westport. Time sheet is available in the clubhouse.

Swinford

In last weekend’s ladies’ competition Marian Thornburg won the stableford event with a score of 42pts, she finished five points in front of Carmel Timoney in second place on 37pts.

Westport

Pat Bree was the winner of last weekends Golfer of the Year competition with David Scott in second place, Shane Larkin finishing in third place, with John Kilroy finishing in fourth.

The Gathering of Golfing Insomniacs will take place at 4am with a shotgun start tomorrow, June 29. Event organiser Paul O'Neill is delighted with the long range weather forecast and is hoping to attract in excess of 50 competitors.

The County Mayo Seniors Golf Tournament will take place at Westport Golf Club on Thursday, July 11. The event is open to all members of the GUI and is sponsored by Hastings Financial Services Ltd. Junior members are reminded that their Captain's Prize will take place on Saturday July 6.
