Athlone to Mullingar cycleway construction to commence in 2014

Progress is being made on the Athlone to Mullingar cycleway, with construction expected to commence this year.

The council’s director of services Hugh O’Reilly gave councillors an update on the Westmeath Greenways Project at last week’s county council meeting.

The section from the Meath county boundary to Mullingar is complete, while the Mullingar to Athlone stretch along the rail corridor has been given approval under Part 8.

The part of the route between Garrycastle in Athlone and the county boundary is at the route selection stage. Meanwhile additional routes around Athlone and Mullingar towns, including branches linking Mullingar with Lough Owel and Lough Ennell, are still awaiting funding.

Acting county manager Barry Kehoe said the approval of the route from Athlone to Mullingar, which provides for the route to travel over existing bridges, is saving the project €300,000.
