Moate Heritage Park gets first public airing tonight

After four years of planning, fund-raising, and construction, the new Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park opens its doors to the public for the first time this afternoon, September 20.

Though the park isn’t completely finished, and requires a few final touches, the organising committee decided to give the public a sneak preview to coincide with Culture Night, and will open the amenity for two hours from 4.30pm.

The 10Ha (25 ac ) former cowpark has taken an estimated €750,000 of LEADER money and local fund-raising to get the park to this stage, and includes a nature trail, a playground, exercise equipment, and art installations.

According to PRO for the park, local businessman Darren Doyle: “Development of the park will continue indefinitely. The vast majority of the work is done, but we’ll be adding as time goes by, particularly with regard to the artwork.”

He explained how the committee has plans for a national student art competition, where the winning entries will be displayed in the park, thus maintaining the perpetual nature of the amenity’s development.
