On the wine shelf

Main À Main Syrah Sud de France Pay d’OC IGP 2011 (Next Door, €10 )

Going into the south of France, this is a relatively new-to-the-market Syrah that comes with a similar layout and appeal to its housemate Chardonnay that featured here recently, and perfect for the changeable weather we’ve been having. Not too light, not too imposing, it’s got obvious blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose with the hint of pepper. On the palate, the pepper is more personable and upright, giving the wine that Rhône Valley feel that lingers in the mouth. Perfect with grills, nibbles, or with something more substantial.

Terras Gauda Abadia De San Campo Rías Baixas Albarino 2011 (Red Earth, €19.95 )

Coming from ‘Green Spain’ with a big title, this is essentially one of the best Albarinos on the market with an attractive nose of apples, citrus fruit, and pear that is very welcoming and reassuring. On the palate, the fruit is a little more intense and fat in its own way with the added dimension of a little pineapple, ripeness, and refreshing acidity and the perfect balance and a long finish. Overall, a bit of a treat that’s perfect to sip on its own or with the energy, zing, and spice of a dish of wasabi dip, cheese, and crackers.
