AIT to hold summer camp for students with dyslexia or dyspraxia

A summer camp for students with dyslexia or dyspraxia will take place at AIT from July 2-6.

The week-long camp is aimed at young people from 9-16 years who have specific learning difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling. In addition to camp activities aimed at students, a number of activities aimed at parents and teachers will take place on the Monday and Friday.

The summer camp is being organised by the Disability Support Service at AIT. Patricia Kearney, disability support service coordinator, said that: “There is a fantastic array of assistive technology resources available for people with specific learning difficulties such as reading and writing. Our experience at AIT is that they are a major boost to our students’ self-confidence and learning. This summer camp is an opportunity to share these facilities and our expertise with the wider community.”

Assistive technology training and activities at the summer camp include: Text Help Read Write Gold; Clicker 6 (writing, language, and literacy support software ); inspiration and kidspiration mind mapping; computer games to aid literacy and maths learning; digital pen technologies; iPad, tablet, and phone technologies; tag rugby; animation and design; rounders; novelty events; and treasure hunt/scavenger hunt.

Monday’s programme includes talks on assistive technology in education, as well as a talk by Ann Heelan, executive director of the Association for Higher Education Access and Disability (AHEAD ). Friday’s programme includes an assistive technology exhibition and demo.

The cost of the summer camp is €95, with family rates available. Bookings can only be made and confirmed on receipt of a completed application form and €40 deposit (non-refundable ). Cheques are to be made payable to AIT. The balance is to be paid on the first morning of camp. The closing date for receipt of booking forms and deposits is Friday May 18.
