Lights...camera...actors!

Calling all actors and local drama groups. An exciting but intensive 'Acting for Film and Television Training Course' will be held in the Radisson Hotel, Athlone on October 28, 29, and 30.

The course is being given by the Film Actors Workshop and will run from 7pm to 11pm each evening. There are just 10 places available for anyone over 16 (no upper age, and over 30s especially welcome ) who is interested in learning to act for camera and finding out how to get acting work in television dramas, TV commercials, and feature films.

No previous acting experience is necessary, only enthusiasm and a willingness to plunge in and take part on-camera. It's a superb chance to learn the essentials of screen acting such as learning how best to audition for commercials, cold-read for feature films, hit your marks, work in close-up, medium shot and long shot, use props, shoot scenes, get an agent, find out what a proper acting headshot is like, network with castings directors, compile a show reel, get called to auditions, and land the part when you get there.

This practical course is led by Shane Munro, film producer and actors agent, who is better known for his roles in television ads and was also executive producer on the award winning film To Catch A Crow, Best Film at the BBC International Film Festival in London, and also screened at the Cannes Film Festival. "The course will give an exciting insight into what it takes to get acting work in film and television and help them gain a firm grasp of the skills required to book work from auditions by taking them through the processes in-front-of-camera," Munro says. "We're here to show people how creative and fun this all is and to shed some light on the many myths associated with the industry."

Past participants have landed lead roles in TV series, award winning feature films, and commercials such as US Emmy award-winning TV drama series Touched by an Angel, BAFTA winning teen-drama series Custer’s Last Stand Up, The Clinic, Fair City, Pure Mule, Fear an Phoist, Kings, Hollyoaks, Whistleblower, Raw, and many more.

Two young women from the course are auditioning in London for lead roles in a new upcoming film for TV shooting in Dublin in November, and last week an actor from the course was called to audition for the new Harry Potter film for the role of Luna’s dad. Others have got leads in TV adverts, including the three teenagers in the lead roles on the Johnny Logan McDonalds ad, and others for Guinness, Bulmers, Kellogs, Galtee, Meteor, Vodafone, Ulster Bank, Tourism Ireland Lotto, and Euromillions.

Altogether the course has produced 17 young people, with little or no previous acting experience, who have landed lead roles in BAFTA-winning or nominated TV dramas.

While this practical course is very intensive, its aim is to develop the skills of those taking part in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. This could be an ideal opening for someone who has done stage, who has never had an opportunity to work on-screen but would love to receive professional guidance.
