Midlands Mini-Marathon to take place this weekend

The inaugural Midlands Mini-Marathon is due to take place this Monday August 3 at 3pm in Mullingar.

Athlete and Olympian Pauline Curley (native of Tullamore ) will be starting and running in the Midlands Mini-Marathon in aid of the Niall Mellon Township Trust. The Westmeath Volunteer Club of the Trust is organising the five mile fun run is are looking for people in the Midlands to get involved. The purpose of the mini-marathon is to raise funds for local volunteers who are going on the Niall Mellon Township Trust’s next building blitz to Wallacedene in Cape Town, South Africa this November.

The mini-marathon which is taking place on Monday is approximately five miles in length, caters for all levels of fitness, and will be a great day out for all the family. The run will start and finish at the Park Hotel in Mullingar.

Aidan Reid, veteran volunteer and organising committee member said: “Monday is going to be a terrific day out for all the family and it would be fantastic to get as many people as possible from the Midlands area involved.  Proceeds from the mini-marathon will enable us to assist the fundraising activities of local volunteers going on the Niall Mellon Trust building blitz in November. This is a very hard week of work, but most rewarding for those who go every year. The charity has a very serious year-round mission to build houses for families living in shacks in the townships of South Africa and since it has first started in 2002, it has built more than 11,000 homes for families living in appalling conditions.  With your help, hundreds of children will get to live in a house for the first time in their lives and have a better and safer start in life. A home provides them with the space to benefit from education, acquire the skills to find employment and the chance to build better lives for their own families in time to come. The building blitz is a unique opportunity for us as volunteers to make a significant difference for children in a truly deprived area of Cape Town.”

The Westmeath Volunteer Club is hoping to make this an annual event. There is a minimum entrance fee of €20 and they need as many participants as possible to get involved, so please sign up today.  For further information on the mini-marathon please contact Maura Maher on (086 ) 6022731.

The Niall Mellon Township Trust will be bringing more than 1,000 Irish volunteers to Cape Town from November 6 to14 to build homes for families living in the Wallacedene township.

The Westmeath Volunteer Club is hoping that people living in the Midland counties will also participate.
