Funds raised for Pieta House courtesy of a 48 hour ‘Darkness Into Light’ walkathon by members of Athlone GAA in 2019 were duly presented to the local branch of the suicide awareness organisation in recent times.

A sum totalling €10,500 was realised as a result of this fundraising initiative but unfortunately, due to the presence of Covid-19 restrictions an official presentation was postponed until it was a suitable and permissible time to do so.

Receiving the presentation cheque, Gerard Tiernan of Pieta House lauded the members of Athlone GAA for their united efforts raising funds at such a critical time for Pieta House.

“We are delighted to have received these funds in 2019 at a time when there was so much uncertainty around a Covid-19 and the hugely detrimental effect that lockdowns had on mental health. Athlone GAA and its members have showed again what a remarkable community based organisation they are, much more than just a football club and we thank them for their efforts and generosity,” Mr Tiernan stated.
