Ann Lennon shines in senior provincial cross country

Sligo racecourse at Cleveragh has hosted a number of cross country events over recent years. The racecourse itself is one lap of almost eight furlongs – a mile circuit and there is a wonderful vista across the town to blue ridge hills and beyond to Ben Bulben. As well as an interior grass track alongside the tarmac strip for ambulances during race meetings, there are a number of grassy tracks up and down the slopes. It recently hosted the Connacht senior, masters, and novices championships.

Mayo AC athletes among top finishers at Galway Bay Run

Mayo AC athletes were well represented on the podium after the three races which made up the Galway Bay Run on Saturday October 1.

Congratulations to all the club members who competed and particularly to those who had top three success: Norah Newcombe in 10k, Ann Lennon in the half marathon, and Brendan Hession in the full marathon. In the 10k Norah Newcombe finished third in the women's race in 37:31. Catherine Conway was just behind in fourth in 38:15.

Beat the ground at the Breaffy 10k

The sixth annual Breaffy 10k race takes place on Sunday October 9 at 2.30pm. The race is part of 2016 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League. The walk/jog/run event is organized by Breaffy Community/Breaffy GAA. This community inspired event is aimed at runners and walkers of all abilities and levels of fitness.

The one lap predominantly flat route starts behind the national school in the village and goes through picturesque country roads to finish at the front of the school. There are toilet facilities at the start/finish line and plenty of parking in the village, at the church, GAA grounds, or in Breaffy House Resort, all within easy walking distance of the national school. There will be water stations at the 3k and 7k marks. When the event is over everyone can relax over tea and refreshments in the school hall. Presentation of prizes will take place at 4pm. All runners and walkers, men and women, are welcome. The course has been officially measured and certified to AAI standards. A permit has been issued for the race by The Athletics Association of Ireland.

Canty and Gleeson take wins in Claremorris

The 15th Annual De Care Dental Claremorris 8k took place recently. It was also a target race in the 2016 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League. The 8k race was over a newly measured one lap course starting at Claremorris track, and replaced the five mile route which was used previously and started in the town centre.

It has a testing final 2k from the Knock Road to the finish line on the track. Conditions were warm and sunny and the water stations were busy. Michael Canty from recently formed Ballina based Moy Valley AC was the winner in 26:24, two minutes clear of John Byrne (Mayo AC) in second with Sean Burke (Tuam AC) third in 29:36.

Victory for Kathy Gleeson in Irishtown 8k

Kathy Gleeson (Claremorris) was the winner of the fourth annual Padraig Cullina Memorial Irishtown 8k. The race was also a Mayo AC 2016 Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League race and the first of five upcoming Club League 8ks/5mile target races or bonus events, with points to be won by competing Mayo AC club members. The course is one lap starting and finishing near the community centre and has some tough stretches, particularly over the final two kilometres.

24th Balla 10k run and walk coming up

“How time flies” was the comment of Brendan Conwell as he took a break from organising the 24th edition of the famous Balla 10K which is fixed for Saturday evening July 23 at 7pm. The man behind the event since its inception in the early 90s looks back fondly on the many enjoyable but sometimes stressful moments associated with organising a highly successful annual fixture like this.

Mayo summer 5k series launched

The launch has taken place of the seventh Annual Vodafone Mayo AC 5k series of five races. The 2016 series will start on Tuesday, May 24 and continue weekly on the following four Tuesdays, all at 8pm sharp. Mayo AC are delighted once again to have the sponsorship of Vodafone C&C Cellular for the Series. Brendan Chambers was on hand to launch the series and continues to give great support to athletics in the county. The series also serves as a major fundraiser for the club.

Magnificent seven for Mayo AC

Mayo AC were represented by a team of 24 (13 women and and 11 men) at the National 10k Championships recently. More than 500 club athletes competed for medals in team and individual age categories. The Mayo AC contingent included five teams - senior women, over 35 men, over 50 men, and two teams of women over 50. It was another great day for the club, continuing their success in national competitions over many years, and in terms of medals won they were the top club in Connacht with seven of their 24 runners winning medals.

Tuohy takes home win at Castlebar Duathlon

Local knowledge pays dividends when local Castlebar man Peter Tuohy of the J2P Team took a comprehensive win at the fifth and last round of the hugely successful Ireland West Duathlon series. Tuohy laid the foundation for his success with a storming bike leg that gave him 60seconds advantage and some breathing space over the hard chasing Brendan Conway Westport Tri, who is a renowned runner. The final 5k run on the out and back new Turlough Greenway turned into a sprint between the two leaders with Tuohy holding Conway off for a brilliant win. Third on the day was the ever consistent Jonathon Rowland from Liquid motion Tri club Ballina.

In the ladies section Lorraine Carey Ballina pulled no punches with a knockout performance to place in the top 5 overall showing her versatility with fastest times on all three stages to take the win. Paula Prendergast Claremorris and of Mayo AC was second and the evergreen Colette Sweeney of Multisport Westport rounding of the podium.

Rugby: Pro 12 Connacht ‘buzzing’ ahead of top-of-table-clash with Leinster

An interprovincial that is also top of the table - it does not come much bigger or better for Connacht Rugby. With just five Guinness Pro 12 fixtures remaining, Connacht face Leinster in the Galway Sportsground on Saturday (5.15pm) in front of a capacity 7,300 crowd, live on both TG4 and Sky Sport, and with the world's top referee Nigel Owens in charge.

Castlebar Duathlon is ready to test the best

A completely revamped course using the beautiful Greenway to Turlough and the bike route using the quite roads around Parke and Pontoon this new course is suitable for all abilities and should be a participant joy to take part in. The Castlebar Adventure Duathlon is now longer but considerably flatter than its predecessor at 39k, with No Booster Mountain to climb no Rathbawn hills to cycle the new course is more forgiving. There is only one distance this year for individuals but there is a relay option and this category has proven very popular throughout the series.
