Westport gardaí delivering ‘good work’

The Superintendent in Westport has congratulated local gardai for the “great deal of good work” they do. At this week’s meeting of Westport Joint Policing Committee, Supt. Mick Murray reported that all major criminal incidents which took place in Westport over the past year have led to convictions or cases currently being processed or pending through the courts.

Barrett calls for clearance of NCT backlog

Ballinrobe musical award celebrations

Celebrations were ongoing in Ballinrobe this week after Ballinrobe Musical Society put in a star performance winning four awards at the HB Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS).

The society was awarded best overall show, best supporting female, best technical presentation and best stage manager awards - all for Ballinrobe Musical Society’s production of the much loved The Pirate Queen.

Mayo Student triumphs in Digital Hub competition

A Mayo student was celebrating this week after he and his team-mates were named overall winners in The Digital Hub’s Best in Show competition, bagging a €1,000 cash prize and work placements in one of Ireland’s leading digital media companies. Aaron Chalke from Ballintubber – who has just finished his final exams in the BSc in multimedia course at Dublin City University – entered the competition along with three of his classmates from DCU. Their team was announced as category winners in the film and video production category of the Best in Show competition last week. This meant all four students will get work placements this summer with Red Diamond Media, a digital media group based in The Digital Hub which focuses on TV, radio and web production, and digital content creation.

Almost two hundred Mayo motorists scrap their old cars for new

Nearly 200 Mayo motorists scrapped their 10-year-old cars and purchased a brand new 2010 model in the first five months of the year. The scrappage scheme was brought in by the Government to help the ailing motor industry, which had seen a number of high profile closures of dealerships and massive job losses since the economic downturn.

Vintners’ federation accuses Government of destroying pub industry

The new drink driving legislation that passed through the Dáil this week lowering the legal alcohol limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100 ml blood, to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, will kill the pub industry according to the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland.

Man pleads not guilty to manslaughter of Mayo garda

Fire services attend two fires on Bonfire night

A spokesperson from the Mayo Fire Service said that Bonfire Night was “very quiet”, with the fire brigade called out to two minor bonfire incidents — one in Westport and one in Castlebar, both of which were easily dealt with.
