Anam Cara meeting

Anam Cara is holding its monthly Parent Evening on Thursday January 21 from 7.30pm to 9pm in the Family Centre, Chapel Street, Castlebar (weather dependent). Anam Cara services are available free of charge to all bereaved parents. For further information see www.anamcara.ie, email [email protected], or call (01) 4045378.

Anam Cara is an organisation that supports bereaved parents, Anam Cara support groups are situated throughout Ireland and provide parents a safe, comfortable, environment where they have the opportunity to connect with other bereaved parents. Anam Cara is an inclusive organisation where parents do not identify themselves by their children’s age, how they died, or if their death was recent or many years ago. What Anam Cara provides is a safe place for bereaved parents to connect with others who understand the intensity of the grief and loss. Although Anam Cara does not offer counselling, each group has a lending library and information on the other services available to parents and families in the local community.

MOG on the move

Mayo Organic Group is delighted to be moving around the county for 2016 and will be visiting new towns and new venues. The first meeting of the year will be held at the VEC, in Westport, on Thursday January 21, at 8pm prompt. Smallholder Tom Lally will give a talk on his organic journey, touching on his reasons for being organic, the many skills and products he incorporates within his farm, and where he hopes to be in future years. All are welcome, including past and potential members. A full and vigorous programme of presentations and outings is planned for the year, with plenty to interest everyone.

Pádraig Ó Loingsigh: champion and scion of Edward Bunting

This Westport Civic Trust lecture will be given by Dr Úna Quinn and will be on Tuesday, January 19 at 8pm in the Westport Coast Hotel. Dr Quinn will talk about the little known contribution of Pádraig Ó Loingsigh to the Bunting Collection of traditional Irish music, that even today is not given the recognition it deserves. His greatest legacy, however, is the large collection of traditional music of Connacht that he collected in the late 18th century, and Dr Quinn will give a detailed account of his life and the travails he experienced in assembling this material. Charlestown Athletic FC 50/50 draw

Last week’s Claudio’s Takeaway Charlestown Athletic FC 50/50 weekly draw winner held in McLoughlin’s Bar, Charlestown was Michael Muldowney, c/o McLoughlin’s Bar, winning €400. Catriona McLoughlin was the winner of the €20 in-house draw. Also, the winner of a a free 12” Claudio’s Takeaway Pizza was Philip Craig. They also gave away two tickets to a Republic of Ireland home international at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, before Euro 2016 and the winner was Noel Seery.

Swinford Tidy Towns

Mayo County Council is once again this year providing free Christmas tree recycling in Mayo. Christmas tree recycling in Swinford will be provided for at the council depot on Kilkelly road only. In Swinford and surrounding areas, trees will be accepted until tomorrow, Saturday January 16. Ensure all decorations are removed from Christmas trees prior to recycling. Ballina Active Retirement

On Wednesday January 20 Noreen Baker will be the question master for the group’s monthly table quiz which will be held in the Pastoral Centre, Ballina, this has a strict start time of 2.30pm. All members are welcome. On Thursday January 21 the group will hold its annual general meeting and election of officers to take it through 2016.
