CCTV application to be submitted for Westport

Superintendent Mick Murray told the Westport joint policing committee this week that an application for CCTV cameras for the town was being submitted under a garda scheme for funding.

Fine Gael TD Michael Ring welcomed the news as it was an issue which he had already raised in the Dáil. The Deputy said that there was a budget for CCTV applications but said there is at present a massive amount of applications, however he gave assurances that he would do his best to keep the pressure on at national level so that Westport was given priority.

The superintendent explained that, in acquiring some CCTV from premises in Westport, the State has to pay a large amount of money to retrieve this CCTV as the system which is installed is specialist and is coded. The superintendent said it is not the businesses’ fault, as they are “being held to ransom” by the suppliers of the CCTV system.
