Government gets C+ grade in Children’s Rights Alliance Report Card

The Fine Gael/Labour Coalition Government received an overall grade of C+ in the 2012 Report Card published this recently by the Children’s Rights Alliance, the best grade received by any government since the Report Card series first began in 2009, however, it lost marks for what has been described as “glaring violations of children’s’ rights”.

High Court challenge to council’s island levy to be heard in March

A HIGH Court challenge against Galway County Council’s Aran Island passenger levy will be heard in March, a ferry company which brought the action was told this week.

The council’s decision to impose an 80 cent levy on all passengers disembarking at Cill Rónáin harbour on Inis Mór brought islanders onto the streets of the city last month.

AAIU finds fatal Corr Na Móna air crash was most likely caused by pilots’ disorientation

Fine Gael Galway West TD Seán Kyne yesterday called for the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) to be given a more central role in the Personal Insolvency Legislation.

Deputy Kyne’s comments follow on from Parliamentary Questions he submitted to both Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, and Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, on the role and resourcing of MABS and the emergence of new, private ‘debt management’ companies.

The leader of an action group set up to save St Francis Nursing Home from closure is urging the HSE West to use the facility to relieve the pressure on the overburdened University Hospital Galway.

Cllr Catherine Connolly says the “ongoing crisis” regarding patients on trolleys at the regional hospital - there were more than 50 people awaiting beds on two separate nights last week - confirms the “absolute necessity” of keeping the 35-year-old Upper Newcastle public nursing home open.
