Prayer vigil for an end to violence against women

An organisation within the Church of Ireland is organising a prayer vigil on Saturday in support of an international campaign which is calling for an end to violence against women.

The Mothers' Union in Tuam, Killala and Achonry will hold a vigil at St Nicholas Church at 11am.

A spokesperson for the organisation says the event will highlight and call for an end to violence against women locally, nationally, and internationally.

"We wish to spread the very important message that violence against women and children is not OK. We need to take action, we need to change attitudes. The Mothers' Union is one of over 130 local groups across Ireland who have taken part in the 16 Days of Action campaign."

The Mothers' Unions refers to figures highlighted by Lakshimi Puri, the acting head of UN Women, which indicate that up to 70 per cent of women in some countries face physical and or sexual violence in their lifetime.

"One in three girls in developing countries is likely to be married as a child bride while 140 million girls and women have suffered female genital mutilation. Millions of women and girls are trafficked in modern day slavery, women's bodies are a battleground and rape is used as a tactic of war."

Everyone is invited to show their solidarity with these women by attending the prayer vigil at St Nicholas' Church. For further information contact Olive at (087 ) 7476506.
