Galway Women host league leaders on Saturday

Galway Women’s FC are back in action this weekend when they host Peamount United on Saturday evening at 6pm in Eamonn Deacy Park.

It is sure to be a huge test for Billy Clery’s Galway Women as they prepare for the visit of the league leaders on the back of a crushing 1-0 defeat away to Kilkenny United last Sunday.

In the process Kilkenny made history in winning their first Continental Tyres WNL game.

Although Galway dominated the game in terms of possession, territory, and chances, Kilkenny displayed a masterclass in defending, with their one shot on target proving to be the vital one running out 1-0 winners.

The goal came on 33 minutes when the ball fell to Kilkenny winger Leanne Tumelty and she connected superbly to hit a rocket of a shot into the top left corner giving Tina Hughes no chance in the Galway goal.

Galway's best chances of the first half fell to Sinead Taylor who was unable to test the keeper with one well struck shot just wide of the right-hand post and a header just over from close range.

Although Galway's wingers Lynsey McKey and Aislinn Meaney terrorised the Kilkenny full backs for much of the game putting in numerous crosses, Galway lacked the final touch in front of goal, and in goal Kilkenny's new signing Nadine Ryan dealt admirably with the onslaught.

Having pushed Peamount very closely earlier in the season, Clery will be looking to bounce back immediately.

However he will be going into Saturday’s game without seven of his squad who are unavailable which will make the task that little bit harder.
