Knocknacarra’s new champion Paul Huish of the Black Dragon Kickboxing Club lands a leg kick on French Champion Johnathan Main en route to the IKF European title.

Paul Huish has joined a growing list of kickboxers from the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club to become a European champion.

The current All Ireland welterweight champion, Huish won the IKF European Super Lightweight K-1 crown after overcoming three-times French champion Jonathan Maine.

The Knocknacarra man provided the main event at the Black Dragon fight night on Saturday in the Menlo Park Hotel when top class overseas fighters from France and Britain provided the opposition for Pete Foley’s gym.

Charlie Ward of the host club retained his IKF 5 Nations Crown by defeating teak tough British champion Gareth Evans from Romford by unanimous decision.

On a full fight card, 10-years-old Josh McHugh opened the show, winning all three rounds, while Jamie O’Sullivan and Thomas Scarry, both clubmates, had a cracker of a White Collar Boxing match with O’Sullivan getting the win.

Thirteen-year-old Wesley Ward won by knock-out in round two over Wexford’s Brandon Maltby in what will surely be one of the KOs of the year, while Gerry King stole the show with another crazy entrance and went on to get the win.

Sarah Worsfold from Britain defeated Regina Fanning in an eliminator fight, while 17-year-old Saoirse Joyce from Knocknacarra destroyed her opponent Aisling Frayne from Wexford who was 10 years her senior, stopping her hard in the second round. Worsfold flies to Italy in October with IKF team Ireland to fight in the Unified World Championships - the largest martial arts games in the world.

Leona Trautt made her boxing debut against a boxer from Cavan Boxing Club and won a unanimous verdict, Cian McCormack from Kinvara won the Junior Irish K-1 Lightweight title by stoppage in the fourth round.
