Titans to fly the Galway flag

Galway basketball team, Joyce Mackie and Lougheed Titans, are through to the men’s National Shield final which takes place on Saturday week.

Titans will meet Team Left Bank Kilkenny in the decider at the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght.

Titans demolished former premier side UCD Marian by 89-58 in last weekend’s semi-final to become the only side flying the flag for Galway at the national cup finals.

The Titans set out their stall in the first quarter and led 26-11 and they continued their domination to extend their lead to 19 points at the break.

Although they lost the third quarter by two points, they were still up by 21 points going into the fourth, and they maintained their tempo for an emphatic victory.

Titans had another huge performance from Tomas Mitkus, who had 24 points, Danny and Sergi Marti were ferocious on the boards, accounting for 20 points. Glenn Hynes made a vital contribution with 11 points to steady the ship in the third quarter, while Chris Coyne and the experienced Paulius Pelzius used their guile and wit to bring home the win.

There was also a good win for Titans Wheelers who overcame Dundalk Ravens 34-27. The result sees them leapfrog the Ravens into third position in the All Ireland Wheelchair Basketball League.
