More joined-up thinking required around pedestrian lights, says McDonagh

John McDonagh, a local election candidate for the Galway Central Ward says there needs to be more joined-up thinking in City Hall with regard to pedestrian lights that have recently been installed in a number of locations around the city.

“The pedestrian lights in locations such as Eyre Square and Dawn Dairies are more controlled, so when all pedestrians have crossed, the amber light flashes and if no other pedestrians are crossing it allows the traffic to continue moving smoothly.

“Whereas the new installations such as at the Docks, the red light continues for at least another 20 seconds after all pedestrians have safely crossed and does not have the amber flashing light. This is adding to the traffic congestion already in the City, and makes a bad situation worse” he said.

Mr McDonagh has asked why has there been a change in policy with regard to these new installations, when what is needed are more innovative ways to keep the traffic moving smoothly in our city.

“The least that would be expected of City Hall regarding improving the flow of traffic in the city is to get the simple issues sorted first,” he concluded.
