Galway Volunteer Centre to celebrate local volunteer managers

People who manage volunteers in charities, community groups or clubs are being invited to a Helping Others Help celebration evening in the PorterShed on the evening of November 29. The event is being organised by Galway Volunteer Centre to recognise the critical effort that often happens in the background of community initiatives in Galway city and county.

“Galway city would be a very different place without all the volunteers who help out in our communities every day,” said Helen Ogbu, organisation support worker with Galway Volunteer Centre. “But this volunteering would not happen without the people who recruit and look after volunteers - the volunteer managers. The volunteer manager is the person who makes sure the organisation has the right volunteers, and that they show up and are supported.”

The evening will incorporate a Mayoral address from Mayor of Galway City Cllr Eddie Hoare, as well as networking opportunities, prizes and a reflection by Linda Keane, volunteer co-ordinator with Ability West on her two decades of volunteer management experience. The volunteer centre will also present on its recent survey of local volunteer managers.

“Most volunteer managers are volunteers themselves, and have stepped up to do that extra but vital piece of organisation,” Ms Ogbu added. “We wanted to give these people an opportunity to meet with others who do the same work, and let us know how we can support them more.”

The event opens for guests at 6.30pm with the main event beginning at 7.00pm. Anyone who would like to attend should register at https://bit.ly/volmangal.
