More recruits and additional funding committed, says Mayor Hoare after McEntee meeting

The Mayor of Galway City Cllr. Eddie Hoare this (Saturday ) morning met with Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to brief her on the recent events in Galway City.

The meeting arranged by Senator Seán Kyne was attended by Mayor Hoare, Minister Hildegarde Naughton, Cllr. Clodagh Higgins and Cllr. Frank Fahy.

The meeting provided those in attendance an opportunity to highlight and discuss with the Minister the serious issues of violence witnessed on the streets of Galway in recent weeks.

The Minister provided a commitment to request additional recruits for Galway and has also confirmed that an additional overtime budget will be provided to address the issues raised.

Following a request the Minister has agreed to visit Galway City in the coming weeks to meet with the Chief Superintendent and his team to discuss the ongoing issues and explore other measures that can be put in place.

“This was a very positive meeting and I take comfort from the commitment of additional resources and an increased Garda overtime budget for Galway. We all took the opportunity to highlight the brilliant work of the local Garda in response to last weekends scenes.

"The arrests are most welcome and order is being restored to our city. We want to ensure our city’s reputation is protected and the safety of all our Citizens is imperative. ” Mayor Hoare added
