New Corrib bridge to open in the next few weeks

Another key milestone has been achieved on the construction of the Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge with the reopening this week of the Newtownsmith Road, with a new stone paved surface making it more appealing to pedestrians and improving the public realm.

The bridge is due to open to pedestrians and cyclists in the coming weeks. It is unique, as it crosses three separate watercourses (Persse’s Distillery River, River Corrib and Friar’s River Canal ) south of the existing Salmon Weir Bridge, spanning a total of 85m.

This is the first new proposed river crossing to be provided in Galway in over 30 years. The project is funded by the National Transport Authority and the European Regional Development Fund.
