MADRA have teamed up with Galway County Council and Galway City Council to provide a discounted microchipping service this Sunday September 18 at the Claddagh Hall. As part of MADRA’s Doing it for the Dogs Fundraiser, dog owners can get their dog microchipped at a substantially reduced rate of €25. For dogs already chipped, owners can avail of a free scan and check service to make sure their contact details are up-to-date.
One in three pets go missing every year and those that are microchipped with up-to-date contact details have a much better chance of being reunited with their owner. “Microchipping is a safe and quick procedure that involves implanting a microchip (about the size of a rice grain ) under the animal’s skin. The microchip contains personal details that link your pet back to you, such as your name, address and phone number.
“If your pet is found, these chips can be scanned by a vet or shelter so they can find all information on the database,” says Marina Fiddler, co-founder of MADRA. ¡
“Having your dog microchipped has been a legal requirement in Ireland since 2015. All you need to do on the day is bring your dog from 10am-12pm or 2-4pm along with some photo ID and proof of address,” she says.
As well as the microchipping service, there are a host of other activities for people to enjoy on the day. There will be free Q&A sessions on Dog Training and Behaviour with MADRA’s dog trainer, Carrie Hoade, snuffle-mat making lessons, pet portraits, a raffle, a cake and buns sale and a huge selection of human and dog goodies to buy.
All funds raised will go directly to the care of the many rescue dogs currently being looked after by MADRA. This year has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of dogs being abandoned and given up for adoption, putting severe pressure on MADRA’s resources.
