A musical breakaway — Patrick Cassidy Summer School and Concert in Mayo this May Bank Holiday Weekend

This May Bank Holiday weekend, leading Irish composer, Patrick Cassidy, will be in attendance at the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris to host a Summer School for orchestral instrumentalists, music students, singers and composition students as well as choral and musical groups.

The event will be held over two days, commencing with a tribute concert and workshops from 28 & 29 April and will cater for both beginners and advanced musicians. The atmosphere will be relaxed and entertaining, with learning along the way. Admission to this workshop is free of charge but places are limited and must be pre-booked, through www.claremorrischamber.ie Also facilitating the workshops will be Michael Dawson who is an award-winning conductor, educator, co-founder and CEO of the Irish Institute of Music & Song. He returned to Ireland in 2019 from the University of Southern California where he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and teaching assistantship to pursue a Doctorate in Musical Arts in Choral Music.

Patrick’s Film Composing Workshop will cover two areas: Composing, orchestrating and programming using orchestral samples and Conforming music to picture. He will take a movie score theme apart and show section by section how it is arranged, orchestrated and programmed using orchestral samples. In other words how to orchestrate realistic strings, brass, woodwind and percussion using software. He will also show how he has collated some of his themes to picture with some examples. There will also be an opportunity for professionals to ask questions and collaborate with him at the workshop.

Michael T. Dawson’s topic consists of Writing for Choir - The weird and wonderful sounds of the human voice.

Jarlath Sweeney, who is heading up the organising committee said that there has been great excitement and interest leading up to this event but there are still a limited number of tickets available. This is a unique opportunity to learn how modern composition for film and stage is undertaken, with full insight on how the business works.”

“The workshops under the theme of ‘The Inside Track on Composing Music for Movie, Theatre & Stage’ have also gained interest in the fact that the new Leaving Certificate curriculum will include Drama, Film & Theatre Studies when introduced for 5th year students in 2024,” he added.

For music lovers and fans of Patrick Cassidy and his compositions, there will be a tribute concert with recital of some of his works by the Limerick University School of Music, the Maynooth Chamber Choir, Music Generation Mayo Harp Ensemble, Harry Carpendale and Anne-Marie Gibbons, accompanied by David Lynn. The concert will take place on Friday, 29 April in the McWilliam Park Hotel. This concert is also open to all and just to those attending the Summer School.
