New centre opens for Galway branch of Down Syndrome

A new resource centre for Galway the Galway Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland has opened at An Fuarán in Moycullen.

The first of its kind in the area, the new centre will provide services and a meeting place for all Galway members and their families.

Spokesperson Cola Murphy says the new centre is a much-needed resource in the area.

"It is the first time that we have had such a facility, and the local committee is delighted to have our own facility at last," she says.

Parent support

In creating a family focused centre for parent support, the centre includes meeting rooms, a speech and language room, office space and a socialising space for other activities associated with the work of the branch.

The branch also has plans to provide a similar centre for the members on the east side of the county.

The opening coincided with Galway City Council Social Inclusion Week which took place recently. And as part of social inclusion week, the centre hosted the Down Syndrome Ireland photo exhibition ‘Who Am I’ which featured members Róisín De Búrca and Fionn Angus.
