Mayo spike their way to league title in maiden season

Mayo Volleyball Club last weekend won the national league division two title after defeating second placed Santry in Kiltimagh. Mayo came into the game full of confidence but were forced to fight all the way in a game that extended to the maximum five sets. The Westerners began well with a flurry of good hits but after weathering a late storm from the Dubliners, quality serves from Paulina Balik Nowak helped Mayo close it out winning 25-18.

This time last year Connacht were working their way to a first Guinness Pro 12 trophy and Champions Cup rugby. Twelve months later they are facing a possible play-off against the French or English to qualify again. It is hardly the position they expected to be in - certainly not returning to Parma to play Zebre in the refixed Pro 12 game this Saturday - when Irish eyes are in Thomond Park.

Aine MhicSuibhne was the winner of the ladies' stableford competition with a score of 33pts last weekend, she edged out Geraldine Evans into second place after she finished with a score of 32pts, with third place going to Julie Loftus. The gents' stableford competition was claimed by Paul Murtagh who scored 38pts for his round last weekend. Second place was taken by Martin Moylette who just edged out Michael Neary for second place after both men finished with a score of 37pts, with Moylette's back nine play seeing him take second spot. The Captain's Drive in will take place on Sunday, March 26.

As the day dawned and the mist lifted over the Achill hills the first round of the Sligo Pallets Border Championship kicked off in style last Sunday. The early stages were challenging due to overnight rain but once the sun came out and the stages dried up the drivers got into their own rhythm and their confidence increased as the day went on.

After much deliberation on the running order of competitors, the entry list was released last Saturday night in the lead up to the Óstán Oileán Acla, Connacht Print And Signs, Mayo Stages Rally which takes place this coming weekend. Entries are still coming in for this motorsport spectacular and Mayo and District Motorsport Club is looking forward to welcoming some 80 crews in addition to the numerous motorsport fans who will be descending on Achill Island.

The All Ireland 40x20 Colleges finals took place in Kingscourt in Cavan last Saturday and there was plenty of interest from Mayo, with representatives from St Colman's College in Claremorris and Balla Secondary School taking part in the finals.
