Ten of the best for Mayo

Volleyball: National League

Newbridge made the long journey west of the Shannon in hope of being the first club to take a scalp at Mayo's impeccable league record. With nine wins out of nine there had been much talk of Mayo attaining their milestone of 10-in-a-row.

Would complacency prove to be a chink in the Mayo armoury and provide the determined visitors a knockout blow to the Westerners winning streak. It didn't take long to find out. Mayo remained steadfast to see out the game and played like they would let nothing blind their sight of victory.  They bombarded the Newbridge defence with a barrage of hits and despite some brave defending Mayo won the set 25-10.

A resolute Mayo side maintained their offensive assault on the Easterners in the second set showing their determination to win it out. And that they did as they eased out to another 25-10 win.  In the third set the Mayo side emptied the bench. Each player displaying unflinching eagerness to win the game, Mayo's exceptional attack was eclipsed only by the impressive defending of Orla Casby from Knock and Kiltimagh's Gillian Doherty. Despite a late fightback Mayo won the set 25-14 and indeed the match 3-0. This result brings Mayo's winning streak to 10 matches.

Mayo captain Mikal O'Boyle said after the game, "After racking up a number of victories we were all very determined to extend our winning streak to 10 in a row. We all gelled together very well today and that cohesion was shown in the performance."

Mayo: Grainne McNeive, Diletta Baratto, Carmel Forde, Chiara Spitzley, Edel Nolan, Mikal O'Boyle, Gillian Doherty, Paulina Balik Nowak, Orla Casby. Coach: Alex Poplonski.
