Last weekend was the Captain’s Scramble competition sponsored by McEllin Plant Hire. The team of Tom Jennings, PJ Brett and Mick Mellet were the winners on 42.2pts, with Martin Moylette, Aine and Eamon McSuibhne finishing in second. Third place went to John and Rose O’Connor and Tim Evans.

Harlequin Adventure Duathlon not long away now

The Harlequin Adventure Race will be held on Saturday March 23 with a start time of 9am. The race is a mix of running, cycling, and mountain running. The event is using the picturesque Lough Lannagh for the first run section, the undulating/hilly roads of Rathbawn for the second cycling section, and the tortuous hill run up to the booster station (Glenisland) that overlooks Castlebar, the views up at the booster station are spectacular, Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick, Clare island, Castlebar town, and Lough Mask are only some of the views, as these can all be seen on the downward descent to collect the bike for the final 15k cycle back to Castlebar via Glenisland, to finish off the race competitors have a final 3k dash back to the line outside the Harlequin hotel for a total distance of 36 kilometres. This event is open to all abilities with the fastest expected to cross the finish line at around 11am in a time under two hours. Both Mayo and their visitors from Kildare tomorrow night could badly do with getting a win under their belts. Mayo are coming off the back of three losses on the bounce, while Kieran McGeeney’s men are heading west after a morale sapping mauling by a rampant Dublin side last Sunday. It was their first defeat of the league, but a number of questions had been hanging over them, especially after a winless and roundly agreed out of sorts Kerry side nearly turned them over in Newbridge a fortnight before.

Mayo need to pick points against Orchard visitors

The Mayo senior hurlers go looking for their first win of the season when they host Armagh in McHale Park on Sunday in the curtain raiser to the footballers’ encounter with Kildare. Throw-in in this game is at 5.15pm and gives the Mayo GAA crowd a great chance to come out and support the small ball game. Saturday evening’s opponents for Mayo have a one win from two games record coming into Saturday’s game, losing out to London at home on the opening day of the league by 0-22 to 0-14, before a third quarter blitz last Sunday saw them beat Roscommon on a scoreline of 3-15 to 2-11 in Athleague.

Centre-half-forward Declan Coulter was the main man for the men in orange, scoring 1-8 for his side over the 70 minutes, with full-forward Conor Corvan chipping in with 2-2. Armagh blitzed Roscommon, scoring 3-3 to 0-1 inside the opening 16 minutes of the second half to set up the win.

Hurlers look for first win against Royals

The Mayo senior hurlers travel to Trim on Sunday afternoon to face Meath in the second round of the National Hurling League Division 2B. The two teams had contrasting fortunes in round one of the competition with Mayo just earning a draw against Roscommon, in a match they should have won, and with Meath defeating title contenders Down in Newry. Meath also hosted Christy Ring Cup winners London last weekend and were convincing winners on a score line of 2-17 to 1-11.

Club championship draw sets up exciting summer

The meeting room of Elverys McHale Park was the setting for Monday’s draw for this year’s Mayo football club championships. A cold Monday night in early March is a long way from the white-heat of battle that will be engaged in by the 16 teams in the senior, intermediate, and junior B championships with 24 teams going to battle for the junior crown come summer time.

The final countdown to the Hotel Ballina and Kennedy Motors Mayo Stages Rally 2013 is under way before the high-octane action takes place this weekend. With competitors arriving from this afternoon, the first task for the drivers and co-drivers after signing-on to the event on Saturday morning will be to drive the route and take pacenotes, before their cars go into scrutineering for the final checks, before being locked away until the start.

Gerald’s looking for famous fifth title

There is no more imposing name in college football than that of St Jarlath’s College, Tuam. The most famous nursery of schools’ football in the country has 48 Connacht Colleges title to its name, dating back to 1932, from its first right up to the last two championships. In the process of collecting those 48 titles Jarlath’s has also put 12 Hogan Cups on the sideboard, establishing it as the best of the best in schools’ football.

Their opponents on Saturday, St Gerald’s College Castlebar, have only four, their last in 2010 to go with their back to back wins in 1996 and 1997, and their first way back in 1929, before even Jarlath’s started picking up titles.

Young Pugilists take to scales

The younger pugilists in Connacht boxing will have the opportunity to qualify for the National Championships this weekend on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 in Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre. Following a very successful Boy 4, Youth 1, Youth 2 Championships in the same venue and again hosted by the Knockmore Boxing Club the Boy 1, 2, 3 and under 18 Girls and Boys will take to the scales at 9am and the first boxers will step between the ropes at noon. A large entry is expected into these championships from the 47 clubs throughout the province and the finals will be held in Oughterard on Saturday March 16 commencing at 10 am.
