Kilmovee 10k was a roaring success on and off the course

Fri, Apr 05, 2013

There was a brilliant turnout on a sunny but chilly Easter Saturday for the 4th Kilmovee 10k run and walk, excellently organised by Kilmovee Shamrocks GAA club and the local community in aid of Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. A good breeze cooled participants as the field turned towards the Roscommon border at Aghadiffen Bridge after 3k. Apart from a slight hill at 9k it was a relatively flat course. Con Marshall (M35) led out with John Mannion and Aidan Callaghan close behind. As the race progressed the Cork man, pushed ahead and established a 17 seconds winning gap at the tape. His finish time was two minutes outside Martin Conroy’s 2012 effort. Brendan Gill was the leading Mayo AC finisher in fourth, less than a minute behind Marshall and he was first M35. Mary Gleeson was first woman once again and was unchallenged all the way. However, she was a bit disappointed with her time – almost a minute slower than 2012. Paula Prendergast underlined her recent brilliant form at Tubbercurry with another PB, finishing second in 39:23 – nearly a minute faster.

Cold conditions put athletes to the test

Fri, Mar 29, 2013

The weekend weather provided testing and challenging conditions for most sporting activities. However, that did not deter thousands of participants in a range of athletics events. Mayo AC runners were to the fore. Breege Blehein, Noel Gibbons and Colette Tuohy, Seamus Gaughan were among the leading finishers at four events with excellent performances in tough conditions. Colette matched her 2012 fourth place finish in the west’s premier ten mile race at Craughwell. Also in action there were Brendan Hession and Gerry Galvin, both with brilliant PBs. Gerry knocked over two minutes off his 2012 Craughwell time. Seamus Gaughan won the o60 section of the Dunboyne four mile event last weekend in time of 24.51. Breege Blehein also took part in the Mayo Mud Run last Saturday at 8.5km, run, crawl and jump through natural terrain and came home in second place in the ladies’ section in a time of 50.19. A number of Mayo AC members also took part in the Harlequin Duathlon last Saturday (more on that in our report on the event), with Noel Gibbons, Dwyane Flynn, Anto Devaney and Sean Murphy all coming home in the top 25 of the men’s section. Mayo AC’s Pauline Moran won the women’s o50 section finishing in a time of 2:14.17, with Colette Sweeney and Ann Heaney both finishing in the top ten.
