Lambs to the slaughter; the class of a top four in division one team against division three mid-table mediocrity, use whatever other phrase you like but the gulf in class between Mayo and Roscommon was of epic proportions. I was being very kind to Roscommon last week while predicting a five to six point win for Mayo, and was fearful of insulting any Roscommon reader in my first column, truth is I expected it to be a lot more, and when asked before we went live on Mid West Radio on Sunday if I thought Mayo would win, I told Shane Curran (former Rossie keeper and current St Brigid’s net minder) and all listening that Mayo would hammer them.

Fresh off the back of their trouncing of Roscommon last Sunday, the best that Mayo have will be back in the colours of their clubs as round two of the Mayo senior and intermediate championships take centre stage this weekend.
In group one the big game of the group and arguably the weekend is the meeting of near neighbours Breaffy and Castlebar in Breaffy on Sunday at 2pm. The home team have got off to a flying start this year in both league and championship, with three wins from three in the league including a wins over Castlebar and Ballintubber, and a big win over Crossmolina in the first round of the championship. Mitchels opened up their championship with a hard fought win away to Davitts and had to do so without Barry Moran and Tom Cunniffe. If Pat Holmes’ side can hit form, they have more than enough quality to go all the way in this competition. It promises to be a hell for leather championship battle, with the action around the middle particularly interesting with the O’Shea brothers manning that area for Breaffy and Barry Moran in that mix for Castlebar.

The days of the count back may be over in boxing following the introduction of the 10 point must scoring system, but some of the bouts are equally tight, as was proven in the 2013 National Junior Cadet Championships last weekend.

The Elverys Sports Super League will hit its penultimate game ahead of the midway mark on Saturday evening and there is only one place any soccer fan should be tomorrow evening, that is Belleek Park in Ballina where the league leaders Ballina Town will host second placed Ballyheane. The home side picked up their fifth win from five league games last weekend when they scored two goals in the final half hour to see off Manulla in Carramore. Ballina were made to work hard for the win, with Manulla succeeding in stifling their attempts until the 63rd minute when Ben McGarry struck and Eugene Gorman made the points safe with their second goal 12 minutes later. Ballyheane, like their opponents, have yet to taste defeat in the league this season, and picked up their second win so far to go with their three draws already in the bank with a five-goal destruction of Claremorris in Ballyheane last Sunday. Ballyheane were three goals to the good by the break with Arek Tobiaz putting the ball in the back of the Claremorris net three times inside the opening 35 minutes. Ballyheane rounded off their win with two goals in the final 20 minutes from substitutes Terry Maughan and Nobert Karo to round off another impressive performance for Ballyheane.

Welcome to my first column as a writer. For the rest of the summer at least, I intend to discuss, analyse and give my opinion on all matters GAA at club and inter-county level. Feel free to e-mail me any comments or opinions you may have. For the week that’s in it my mind in focused on one thing only and there’s no prizes for guessing what that is. Mayo welcome Roscommon to Castlebar on Sunday for the Connacht semi-final and a right to play either London or Leitrim in the Connacht final. It sounds a bit surreal, but yes, London could be in a Connacht final. With the current upheaval in Leitrim and four players designated to the scrapheap for disciplinary reasons I may just fancy a flutter on London to make the final. Leitrim have a small enough panel to pick from without losing players, most notably Wayne McKeon, arguably one of their best players, but that’s for another day.
