The Mayo Senior championship was in overdrive last weekend (I am sure James Horan was waiting anxiously by his phone to ensure all his players came through their respective games) and while I was not surprised and had predicted most of the results, the drubbing Castlebar dished out to Breaffy left me a little shocked especially as I had them pencilled in for my “value bet of the week”.

Last Saturday evening in a windy McHale Park, the Mayo minors opened up the championship account for the year with a comprehensive 10 point win over Leitrim setting up this Sunday’s semi-final against Galway. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser this week ahead of the game, Mayo manger Enda Gilvarry looking back on the Leitrim game said, “It’s good to be up and running, we could have done better, but coming into any championship game you’d take a 10 point win.” He also pointed out that it was a hectic week for a number of his players last week. “It was a difficult week for some of the lads, who were coming off the Leaving Cert and then facing into club championship games the next day.”

The runners and riders for the places in the last eight of the Mayo senior and intermediate football championships have just over another week to get their houses in order for the final round of group games in the championship. The final round of games are down to be played next weekend, Saturday July 6 and Sunday July 7, two weeks before the scheduled Connacht final meeting between Mayo and the winners of this weekend’s replay between London and Leitrim. Mayo County Board vice chairman confirmed to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday that the games were to go ahead as planned and that the County Board CCC were meeting last night (Thursday, June 28) to set out the fixtures.
In last weekend’s senior championship, Ballintubber and Ballina booked their places in the last eight picking up their second wins in group two, before they meet each other to decide the group winners in the last round. Castlebar Mitchels laid down a serious marker of intent in group one by destroying Breaffy, while Crossmolina picked a win over Davitts. Castlebar are all but through, while a win for Breaffy in their last game will see them through in second place. Charlestown picked up their second win of the campaign away in Knockmore leaving Westport and Knockmore to battle it out between themselves in the final group game to follow them into the last eight. The defending county champions Ballaghaderreen bounced back with a big win over Garrymore to put themselves in pole position in group four, but all four sides still have a chance to make it through on the last day. Ballinrobe will host Ballaghaderreen, while Garrymore host Aghamore. In the intermediate championship, Kiltimagh and Kiltane are through from group four with two wins from two, while Kilmaine, Killala, and Moy Davitts all kept up their 100 per cent starts in the competition.

Four Mayo boxers were in action in the 2013 National Junior Cadets semi and finals last weekend. Eric Nash (Knockmore BC) was to participate in his semi final in the 52kg division against Peter McCarton (Bishop Kelly BC, Tyrone) but the northern boxer withdrew from the championships. Nash was up against a good clean puncher Airijus Vitlipas (St Davids, Naas) in the final on Saturday afternoon. Nash and his father and coach had the luxury of watching the Polish boxer in his semi final on Friday evening and the important notes and video was taken to view later that night. The homework was done, the hard training was complete and when Nash stepped into the ring at 2pm on Saturday he was simply outstanding throughout the three rounds and caught the Naas boy every time he lead a punch and missed which was quite often. Vitlipas was considered a quality boxer by various club coaches after his impressive semi final win but Nash made him look quite ordinary and the Knockmore boxer went on to win his second personal title and the clubs second in their short five year history. The three judges gave all rounds to Nash and he won on a unanimous decision 3-0.
