Mayo AC's Summer 5k Series got off to a successful, bright, and colourful start at Lough Lannagh last week with the Castlebar 5k. Over 200 runners gathered in warm evening sunshine. The winner was James Ryan, who got away from a four man group after the first circuit to finish in 17:30. Second was Joe Hastings 17:49, and third went to Peter Tuohy 17:59. The first woman was Colette Sweeney 20:56, second Edel Reilly 21:29, and third Pauline Moran 22:00. There were many runners from Fit4Life groups who had a good test over this scenic course. The series will continue over the coming weeks around the county.
Half marathon championship coming up
The 2013 AAI National Half Marathon Championships takes place almost a month earlier than usual on Bank Holiday Monday August 5. This year's race is incorporated into the Dublin Rock n Roll Half Marathon, a world renowned event which is expected to bring thousands of competitors and spectators onto the streets of the city as part of the Gathering festivities. Once again Mayo AC plan to have one of their largest teams at the event, buoyed on by their success earlier this year at the National 10k Championships. The club expect to be challenging for team medals in all six categories: that of senior men and women, over 35, and over 50. It is expected that quite a few will be also be challenging for individual medals.
Michael McGrath, chairman of Mayo AC, is encouraging as many members as possible to be part of their green and red team on the big day, while top athletes will certainly be challenging for national success. This event is open to all. It is an ideal stepping stone for any member who plans to do the Dublin Marathon later in the year. Likewise Ann McDonnell Mayo AC secretary said, "This is the perfect opportunity for Fit4Life members to take on the challenge of their first half marathon with the support of more experienced club members on hand to offer advice." All Mayo AC members available to compete are asked to reply by text including their name to Ann at 086 8635534 by today Friday, June 28.
