Claremorris hosts largest ever Gaelic4Girls programme

Claremorris Gaelic4Girls has the proud distinction of being the largest ever Gaelic4Girls programme to be held nationwide. The Gaelic4Girls programme in Claremorris was a tremendous success, with a phenomenal 101 girls taking part over eight weeks. This Ladies Gaelic Football Association programme was held in association with Claremorris LGFC with the support of Mayo Sports Partnership. The programme targeted girls between the ages of nine and 13 who are not part of a ladies’ football club and introduces them to the sport in a fun environment. The girls were taught the basic skills of ladies’ Gaelic football on a fun basis by coaches and then demonstrated their new skills through a series of mini games.

Celtic look to kick out in front in Super League

Castlebar Celtic will look to extend their lead at the top of the Elverys Sports Super League this weekend when they face Ballinrobe Town. Declan Kilkelly’s side currently sit top of the table with two wins and a draw from their opening three games, while Ballinrobe Town are pointless at the bottom of the table. Celtic had last weekend off with their FCS Cup game against Manulla postponed until Thursday fortnight (May 19), while Ballinrobe Town exited the competition after losing to Claremorris at home. Claremorris are currently in second place in the Super League thanks to two wins from their opening trio of games.

Club competitions back in force in Mayo

In the men’s competition sponsored by Bar One, Castlebar, last weekend, Bob Leggett was the winner with a score of 42pts, he finished seven points in front of John Parsons and eight points in front of third place finisher Jackie Heneghan. In the ladies’ section Rose O’Connor was the winner with a score of 42pts, Imelda Flatley came second on 39pts, with third placed Aine McDonald two points further back. The category prize was taken by John O’Connor with Marissa Brett the junior competition winner. This weekend’s competition is sponsored by Noel McElilin, Manulla, and a committee meeting will take place in the clubhouse on Monday May 9 at 8pm.

The event is to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland and he is looking for sponsorship from local business which will go 100 per cent to Down Syndrome Ireland. Juniors go hunting for Connacht final place

The Mayo junior team will go in search of a place in the Connacht Junior Championship final this evening when they host Roscommon in the semi final of the competition in Ballyhaunis. John Kelly’s side will be facing into their second game in seven days’ after they saw off the challenge of Leitrim in a close fought encounter in Aghamore a week ago. Mayo had only two points to spare over a Leitrim side managed by former Mayo senior manager Mickey Moran in the east Mayo venue. Swinford’s Colin Dempsey was the main man for Mayo bagging a personal haul of 1-8 from Mayo’s total of 1-15 on the night.

Connacht close out season with Munster trip

The curtain closes on Connacht Rugby’s season with a final Irish derby clash against Munster at Thomond Park this evening (7.05pm). Magners League leaders Munster, unable to be overtaken, have already qualified for a home semi-final, while Connacht are in a respectable ninth place, ahead of Treviso, Glasgow, and Aironi.

In the Stableford competition sponsored by Lawnmower and Tool Hire, Castlebar, Padraig Joyce was the winner of the gents’ section with a score of 38pts, Dermot McMahon came second with Martin Boyle third. The ladies’ was won by Kitty O’Connor with Geraldine Kilgallon second and Mary Lavin third. The category prize went to Catherine McNulty.

Davitt College student captains gymnastic team at the World Championships

Shannon Garrett, a fifth year student at Davitt College, Castlebar, has just been selected to travel to Florida in April to compete as part of the Irish gymnastics team at the World Championships. She will captain the Irish team at the championships which will take place in Disneyland, Florida, with teams from all over the world including Germany, France, Korea, Russia, and England. This is the first time an Irish team has competed in this championship. The event will be covered on American TV.

Kilmovee 10k starts summer season

Conditions were good for the second annual Kilmovee 10k last Saturday afternoon. Some said it was very hot, but nobody among the record turnout of runners and walkers — 335 finishers — was really complaining. There were entries from 16 counties also. This year the event was the first race in the 2011 Mayo AC C&C Cellular
