There are derby days in all sports all over the globe, but there are very few that are as intimate as what has become the now annual shoot-out for the Mayo senior hurling championship between Ballyhaunis and Tooreen. On Sunday afternoon in the east Mayo village of Tooreen, that rivalry will have another showdown for local pride and county honours.

Breaffy and Knockmore set up semi-final date

Last years beaten finalists Breaffy made it to their third Mayo senior semi-finals in four years on Saturday afternoon after a hard fought win over Crossmolina Deel Rovers in MacHale Park. Peter Ford and Shane Conway’s side were pushed right to the wire by a battling brave Deel Rovers side, with the displays by the likes of Fionan Duffy, Conor Loftus and Cathal Carolan pointing towards a very bright future for the north Mayo men. There were also very good showings for the beaten side by goalkeeper Patrick Loftus and veteran Peader Gardiner who almost caused a major surprise against a much fancied Breaffy side.

O'Connor hammers home the point for Ballintubber

They didn’t quite hit the net as many times as they did against Knockmore in the semi-final two years ago, but Ballintubber laid down a serious marker of intent in MacHale Park on Sunday afternoon, hammering Garrymore by 6-14 to 1-8 to set up a mouthwatering semi-final showdown against Castlebar Mitchels next weekend.

It was back to the grindstone for our county players last weekend as most of them had to put the hurt of the previous week's All-Ireland replay loss behind them to help their clubs in their bid to make the play offs, maintain status, and for others to help their team try to avoid being in a relegation dogfight.

Four games spread across three venues will determine the future of eight sides all looking to be the one to claim the Mayo Intermediate Championship and book their place with the big boys in the senior event next summer. The last few games that had to be tidied up in the group stages took place last weekend and Kiltimagh, Westport, Belmullet, and Islandeady topped their groups, with Moy Davitts, Burrishoole, The Neale, and Shrule Glenncorrib joining them at the quarter final stage as runners up.

Achill move up to join the big boys

The two sides who will be joining the big boys of Mayo junior soccer next season are now known, as Achill Rovers clinched second place in the Premier Division with a dramatic 3-2 win away to Partry Athletic last Sunday. The islanders booked their place as Brandon McGing put them in front for the first time in the game with seven minutes left to ensure they pipped Bangor Hibs to the promotion spot. Partry who were battling to stay in the division themselves took the lead early on through Jason Duddy, before John Kiernan pulled them level five minutes later. Athletic went back in front before the breakthrough, Michael Seoighe heading home. However Achill dug deep and Sean McNamara levelled it up with 24 minutes left on the clock before McGing's late strike sealed the deal for them.

Ballina in top of the table clash

Ballina are leading the way at the top of Division 1A of the Connacht Junior League after three rounds of games, with three wins from three, picking up two bonus points along the way. So far they have seen off the challenge of Galwegians 32-5, Westport in the local derby 14-9 on the road, and then hammered Buccaneers 41-0 in Athlone in their third game. In those three games Ballina have run in 10 tries, while only once has a side crossed the whitewash against them

Champions Cup returns to the Sportsground

Bona fide Champions Cup team Connacht will face four-times European champions Toulouse on Saturday (5.30pm) to open their 2016/17 European campaign. The Sportsground will boast a seasonal capacity crowd of 8,057 with extra terracing erected at pitch ends to ensure an electric atmosphere for what is a defining match in Connacht's long history.

Gibbons the hero as Louisburgh rally to claim Junior honours

When Matthew Flanagan drove the ball over the Louisburgh bar five minutes from time from a free well out beyond the 45m line in MacHale Park on Sunday, it looked like the McDonnell cup would be making the short 11km journey out the road to Balla for the Winter. But Louisburgh hadn’t read that particular script and the seasiders dug deep from there on in and through injury time to rally and hit the final two points of the day to seal a historic win for John Kelly’s outfit.
