Mayo head north as FBD League comes to an end

Mayo's interest in the latter stages of the FBD League came to an end last Sunday when Roscommon ran out three point winners over Mayo in Hyde Park - winding up a run a hectic series of games for Mayo when they faced Leitrim, Galway, and Roscommon in a five day run. Speaking after the game on Sunday, Mayo manager Stephen Rochford felt the tight run of games did catch up with his side at the end: "Ahh…. well three games in five days will always catch up with you, especially at this time of year. But look, Roscommon were worthy winners and it’s disappointing that we didn’t stretch on in that final quarter and narrow the gap and to ask questions."

On Saturday, the men from east Mayo will face off with a club that hit the headlines for other nocturnal goings on last year, for a place in the All Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship final.

Lahardane have gone from outsiders for the junior championship in Mayo to, not only Mayo, but Connacht junior champions in the space of a brilliant few months last summer. Now they are just an hour away from Croke Park and a tilt at something that will never be forgotten.

After last weekend's hectic round of action in the last 16 of the Connacht Junior Cup it is back to league action for a handful of Mayo sides this weekend. It was a pretty successful weekend for Mayo teams last Sunday, with Ballina, Castlebar, and Ballinrobe all picking up wins - while Westport and Ballyhaunis were put out of the competition by Tuam and Corinthians respectively.

Connacht host their final European pool fixture against French visitors Oyonnax on Saturday determined to finish with a flourish and nail down a home quarter-final. Expected to overcome Oyonnax with a bonus point, having produced a 43-15 win in Geneva in round one, Connacht are still not taking anything for granted in their bid to complete this series of games with a win.

Robbie Hennelly’s injury time penalty save from Ciaran Murtagh was the last act in Mayo’s five day trilogy of games in the FBD League as Kevin McStay’s side ran out three point winners in a bitterly cold Hyde Park - as for the second time in three days, Mayo failed to take advantage of their opponents having a man sent off.

At the second time of asking, Mayo got their 2018 season under way on Wednesday night against Leitrim in the FBD League - having to wait an extra three days after their game against Galway was called off shortly after it was due to throw-in on Sunday due to a frozen pitch.

Having won the competition two years ago and reaching the final of the All Ireland Junior Cup just before Christmas, north Mayo outfit Ballina look to be the best placed Mayo side to have a crack at winning the prestigious prize. But then cup competitions take on a life of their own quite often, however looking at how strong Dave Newman's side have been so far this season they will be worthy favourites to go all the way in this competition.
