Old rivals square off again with no room for error
Fri, Jul 14, 2023
Familiarity can breed contempt, but there will be plenty of respect between the players of Mayo and Galway on Saturday afternoon when they come face to face once again on the field. Both parties will be continuing the GPA led protest by ladies players looking for equality in the game.
It will be the third meeting of the sides so far this year, but unlike their league and Connacht Championship meetings from earlier in the year, there is no room for error this time around, with a place in the All Ireland Senior Football Championship semi-finals up for grabs for the winners.

How were Mayo going to react after seeing a place in the last eight slip though their fingers in the final quarter against Cork a week earlier was the big question heading into Pearse Stadium last Sunday.
Would they be able to shake it off and get right back on the wagon as they have done so many times in recent memory or would they fall to the boys from south of the border and exit the championship while the last embers of Bonfire Night were still smouldering along the rugged coastline of the county?

Little did I think that in trying to explain the scoring permutations in last week's column, they would have such relevance for the fate of six teams last weekend. There were frantic finishes to three games in three different venues that had serious consequences for the teams involved.

It's do or die from now on in for Mayo. That was always going to be the case no matter what happened last weekend against Cork, but from being six points up and looking like they had two feet in the All Ireland quarter-finals proper after topping their group - they ended up in losing by three points and finishing in third place and now have to hit the road this Sunday, rather than having a week's break.

The importance of defeating Cork on Sunday in round 3 of the All-Ireland group stages cannot be over-emphasised. If Mayo win, they top the group and go straight through to the All-Ireland quarter finals, ensuring they will avoid an extra game and a quarter final clash against another group winner, which will most likely be Dublin, Derry and Galway. Right now, that's the way it looks anyway.
If Mayo happen to lose to Cork, It will leave Mayo, Cork and Kerry (providing they beat Louth which they will) all on four points, meaning the placings will come down to scoring difference.

After what feels like an eternity, Mayo are finally back in competitive fare as they take on Kerry in Killarney this Saturday in Group One, Round 1, of the All-Ireland series. As expected, Louth were confirmed as the remaining team making up Group One after they were mauled by Dublin in the Leinster final by 21 points.
It feels a bit weird that in a compressed season with way more championship games being played, you can still go a full six weeks without a game. That's a bigger gap than you would ever have had to contend with back in the "one chance only" days, when sometimes, four games were all it took to win the All-Ireland title.

The Mayo players were enjoying the fruits of their labours judging by the noise emanating from their dressing room deep in the bowels of Croke Park last Sunday evening after their four point win over Galway, as their victorious manager Kevin McStay was giving his thoughts on what had happened that afternoon to the press pack.
A obviously joyous Mayo manager was delighted to claim the National Football League Division One title, but knew his side had little time to celebrate with Roscommon coming up this Sunday afternoon in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in their Connacht Championship opener.
