A storming first half display saw Galway claim their fifth Connacht Ladies Senior Football Championship title in six years in MacHale Park, Castlebar on Sunday. Led by their centre-half forward Tracey Leonard who finished with nine points they saw off Mayo’s challenge with a composed and confident performance.

It wasn’t pretty for a long time, but when it came to the crunch Mayo dug deep and ground out the win the required against Derry in MacHale Park. The wide count almost tallied the scores for Mayo on the day, as they looked like they might kick themselves out of the championship and only for a late rally they could very well have been looking at the rest of the summer free from inter-county action.

There has been a seismic shift in football power in Connacht in the last four years. After Mayo's 17 point drubbing of Galway in Salthill in 2013 it looked like it would take the Tribesmen light years to make up the ground. After slowly narrowing the gap in 2014 (seven point Mayo victory) and 2015 (four point Mayo victory) they have now caught and surpassed us, beating us twice on the spin in crucial Connacht championship semi-finals.

Last weekend's round of action in the Elverys Sports Super League saw the top division reach the half way point with Manulla still holding on to their lead at the top of the table, they sit two points in front of Westport United, with both Castlebar Celtic and Straide and Foxford United three points further back, making for what looks to be an exciting second half at the top of the table. At the bottom of the table there are three sides separated by just three points, with Achill Rovers, Ballyheane, and Glenhest all battling it out to avoid the drop at this stage, but a run of form from any of those sides could see those placed above the bottom three dragged into the dogfight at the bottom.
