The Mayo GAA season kept moving this weekend with the semi-finals in both the senior and intermediate championships, a number of relegation games and some league deciders taking place over a hectic 30 hours or so between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.

A storming early second half performance from Ballintubber laid the foundations for their progress to this Sunday's Mayo senior football championship semi-final. Despite seeing Cillian O'Connor sent to the line with 15 minutes left for a second yellow card, Ballintubber were able to use all their experience to hold off their southern opponents down the home stretch and book a meeting with Claremorris in the final four.

After Wednesday night's win for Ballintubber over Hollymount-Carramore, we now know the four sides who will be competing in Sunday's semi-finals of the Mayo senior football championship. Defending champions Castlebar Mitchels still look the team to beat after their win over last year's finalists Knockmore. They haven't hit full tilt yet but they are still the leading lights in the county at the minute, but their opponents on Sunday Garrymore will have plenty to say about it before the game is over in MacHale Park.

All roads lead to Ballina tomorrow for what promises to be two real battles, with a place in the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship final up for grabs. The action gets under way at 2.45pm with the meeting of last year's beaten intermediate finalists Kiltimagh and last year's Mayo and Connacht junior champions Louisburgh.

The Mayo Senior championship quarter finals threw up a couple of eye catching results over last weekend. It was the first time ever that the four group winners failed to win their quarter finals, although Ballintubber did get through to the semi-final at the second time of asking after Wednesday night's replay with Hollymount- Carramore.

This promises to be something special on Sunday, we got it wrong last weekend when we picked Balla to see off Lahardane and book their spot in Sunday's semifinal — John Maughan's men hit Balla with everything they had and were deserving eight point winners. They never let Balla settle and against the wind they went in leading by two points, in the second half they really upped the ante and outscored their opponents by 2-7 to 1-2, after they had been pulled level five minutes into the second half, with sub Cormac Reilly netting two goals in the final quarter of the game.

The U18s Mayo Volleyball Club defeated Clare in Ennis on Sunday. Both teams started slowly in the opening set. The two sides were exchanging many scores until Mayo settled midway though unleashing a rally of scores finishing with a 25-15 win.
