Warriors were undefeated in the league last season and maintained their undefeated claim until this Mustangs team rode into the Strokestown Sports Complex last Friday.

Castlebar Celtic continue to top the Mayo League Masters Division One table after week two of the competition, despite having a bye in the latest round of action. Wins for Fahy Rovers, Ballyhaunis Town, and Manulla saw them all pick up their first points of the season but without the scoring difference to knock Celtic off top spot.

Fahy picked up their first win, and came out on the right side of a tight result, this week with a 4-3 victory over Straide and Foxford United. Two goals from Colin Napier were the catalyst for the west Mayo side while Sean McGreal and Sean O’Connor also hit the net. S&F pushed hard to get themselves back on level terms towards the end of an end to end game but despite goals from Declan Smyth, Brendan McHugh and Michael Prendergast they could not get a leveller.

As everyone thought going into this game there was going to be nothing between these two sides when the final whistle went, and there literally was nothing, as they could not be separated at the end of a pulsating encounter that finished level on a score of 5-17 to 6-14 in Ballyhanuis. The sides will meet again this Sunday in the same venue at 2pm, with extra time and the potential of a point scoring shoot-out to follow if it is still level, and after these sides combined for a total of 11-31 last time out the smart money might be on just that outcome.

The heart-rates have probably only got back to normal for Moy Davitts' supporters following last Saturday nights amazing come from behind injury time victory in the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship final. Trailing by three points in injury time, having led by five at the turnaround and a man up, they had only managed to score a single point in the entire 30 minutes of normal play in the second half - but somehow they managed to win the game in a amazing four minutes of action. James Mulderrig hammered home a thunderbolt of a goal from 20 yards out, to level it up - it was that type of shot that once it left his boot you could see it was only going to end up in one place and that was followed by a floating effort from Séan Kelly which seemed to just about make it over crossbar.

The Roscommon League squeezed into the next round of the Oscar Traynor trophy when they saw off the Mayo League following a penalty shoot-out last Sunday afternoon in Lecarrow. The hosts opened the scoring late in the opening half, but the lead was short-lived as Mayo soon grabbed an equaliser. There were no further goals in the second half or in extra time, so the lottery of penalty kicks was required, and where Philip Coffey’s men held their nerve.

Moy Davitts break Kiltimagh hearts at the death

Moy Davitts were crowned county intermediate champions after a dramatic replay victory against neighbours Kiltimagh last Saturday evening in Elverys McHale Park. In a pulsating contest that ebbed and flowed, Pat Clarke’s charges won the spoils after scoring a goal and a point in the final minutes snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

It was a heartbreaking defeat for Kiltimagh who soldiered so well in the second half despite being down to 14 men and five points in arrears at the interval. They regrouped and took the game to Moy Davitts in that second half going three points in front in a real display of grit and character. Games of this importance are won by big plays and James Mulderrig's equalising late goal followed by Sean Kelly's match winning point will go down in Moy Davitts' folklore. I have no doubt after a night of celebrations it was back to the grindstone on Monday for the winners as they are straight at it again this weekend taking on Michael Glavey's of Roscommon this Sunday in the Connacht semifinal, again in Elvery's McHale Park. This represents a big opportunity for Moy Davitts as they strive to follow in the footsteps of Westport last year winning the Provincial intermediate title.

Mitchels make it a magic three-in-a-row

Title number 31 for Castlebar Mitchels will be one that will be remembered for a long time in the county town, it was their first three-in-a-row since the mid 1950s and it also saw them beat their most recent nemesis Ballintubber in the final for the first time after their near neighbours had beaten them in their three previous final meetings in 2010, 2011 and 2014.

The conditions weren’t the best - but there was enough drama to ensure that next weekends replay between these two east Mayo sides - will be one to watch. It’s hard to know which of these sides will feel the happier after the full time whistle - Kiltimagh led by seven early in the second half and missed a number of good chances throughout the game.
