Council defers decision on community benefits contribution policy

The members of the Mayo County Council deferred a decision on adopting the draft policy on Community Benefit Contributions required for certain major developments at their December meeting on Monday. The policy will set down the requirements for a developer in relation to making a contribution to local areas affected by future major developments.

Sinn Féin’s European Parliament candidate Matt Carthy stepped up his campaign for election to Brussels last week when he paid a visit to Mayo to meet and greet the people. Carthy was born in England to a Monaghan mother and Roscommon father, before he moved to Strokestown where he spent most of his childhood, briefly moved back to England for less than a year until the family moved back permanently to Carrickmacross in Monaghan.

A group of jobseekers from the Erris area in north Mayo have just completed a 14 week long specialised sports coaching course which it is hoped will provide them with the tools to obtain employment.
The Goal to Work sports coach training programme, which is run two days each week, allowed the trainees to become fully qualified GAA, rugby, and soccer coaches with additional sports modules in child protection, first aid, disability awareness, physical activity, and active leadership completed. Trainee coaches also honed their skills by organising several community events and coaching in local national schools giving many school children some quality participation experiences.

Castlebar based Fianna Fáil vice-president and local area representative, Lisa Chambers, met with Fianna Fáil MEPs Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher, Liam Aylward and Brian Crowley in Brussels on a recent trip. Lisa, who is chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Fianna Fáil National Executive, and three committee members were invited to Brussels to visit the Commission and the Parliament, and also to meet with the Fianna Fáil MEPs.
They met with representatives of the ALDE Party, of which Fianna Fáil is a member. They also met representatives of the Committee of Regions, a representative body for local and regional authorities in Europe and with a representative of the Cabinet of the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

Councillor Eugene McCormack has welcomed the commitment by council management to implement the report in relation to the control of weed growth on Lough Lannagh and Billberry Lough. The commitment came following a motion tabled by Cllr McCormack at last Thursday’s Castlebar Town Council meeting requesting that the report be implemented.
The report “Aquatic plant management recommendations for Billberry and Lannagh Loughs”, was carried out by Dr Joe Caffrey of Inland Fisheries Ireland and details how the extensive weed growth on both lakes can be dealt with on a medium to long term basis.
