St Gerald’s are Canada bound for Lego League

Six students from St Gerald’s College Castlebar will be packing their bags and heading for Canada this summer to represent their country. The sextet of James Mc Ginty, Donal Boyle, Conor Geraghty, Barry Chambers, Calum Kyne, and Evan Heneghan will be competing in the First Lego League International Open in Toronto after their robotics team won the Irish First Lego League. It was announced this week by the Irish First Lego League (FLL) organisers Robotics Ireland in conjunction with main sponsors SAP, the global software multi-national, that SGC Robotics (St Gerald’s College Robotics) would be going to Canada to represent Ireland with SAP sponsoring the team.

New car sales up over first two months of the year in Mayo

New car sales in Mayo have seen a big jump over the first two months of the year compared to 2013. There were 712 registrations of new cars in Mayo over the two months, up from 566 over the same time last year. There was a similar increase in the number of new light commercial vehicles registered in Mayo, with 109 registered over the first two months of the year compared to 87 in 2013. The number of new heavy commercial vehicles being registered remained pretty much the same so far this year compared to last year, with 11 over the first two months of the year compared to 12 in 2013.

Visitor numbers jump at Westport House

Pirate adventuring, winter wonderlands, and a boutique music and food festival have all played a part in growing visitor numbers to stately Westport House by some 50 per cent in the last five years.

The house and grounds recorded 80,000 visitors in 2009. That number has now grown to 130,000 visitors calling to the 18th century attraction in 2013.

CCTV has reduced crime by ninety per cent says Burke

Fine Gael councillor Michael Burke told a meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee that since the installation of CCTV in Ballinrobe there has been dramatic drop in crime in the area. Speaking at the committee, Cllr Burke said: “We had CCTV installed in Ballinrobe and we have our neighbourhood watch scheme going. A few weeks ago the Gardai informed me that in the town, crime has fallen by about 90 per cent in the area that’s covered by the scheme. Now, that’s probably the highest drop in crime rate in any part of the country. I want to say thank you to the superintendent in our area who worked very hard with us to get this and I’ve to compliment the county manager who made such substantial funds available to it.”
