€100k in funding for Mayo heritage projects

Nine Mayo heritage projects were approved for funding this week by Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan under the Gaeltacht Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme 2014. The total value of the nine projects in Mayo is €103,000. The successful projects were St Michael’s Church, Ballina: €7,000; Enniscoe House, Castlehill: €14,519; Killala Bathing House, Killala: €6,478; Lavelle’s Pharmacy, Killala: €7,100; Thomond House, Westport: €7,920; Holy Trinity Church, Westport: €14,983; Owenmore House, Correens: €15,000; Bridge House, Westport: €15,000; and Ballinafad House, Ballinafad: €15,000.

Fine Gael MEP for Mayo Jim Higgins has pledged his support for the introduction of a VAT exemption on mountain rescue equipment, which would significantly reduce the costs of mountain rescue teams in Mayo, as well as all over Europe.

Cllr Jarlath Munnelly has confirmed that Mayo County Council will be allocating a further €15,000 each towards works at Lacken Pier and Ballycastle Pier. This is on top of the grant of €135,000 that has been allocated to each of these piers by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The Connacht regional final of the Santa Rita/LIFE Magazine Irish Restaurant Awards took place in Hotel Westport, Mayo, this week and named the top restaurants in the west for 2014. Some 250 restaurant owners and staff celebrated their hard work and achievements at the Awards, which saw many well-known restaurateurs of Connacht turn out to see if they had won one of the prestigious awards.

The east Mayo town of Kiltimagh will gain international TV exposure next week with a film crew from Irish TV capturing the wonderful music and magic of the Kiltimagh Choral Festival for a TV programme. The hour long programme, called Out and About in Ireland, will be broadcast next Thursday at 9pm on Irish TV - Sky channel 191, Freesat 400, and online on www.irishtv.ie.

Turlough children need a playground — Barrett

Residents in Turlough have raised the issue of a playground for local children at a community meeting this week, according to Cllr Harry Barrett. The Labour party local election candidate said this week that he was contacted after the meeting to request that the council provide a playground for local children. The meeting was told that there are some 120 children under the age of 12 within a two mile radius of the village, and currently they have no public play facility.

Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly this week welcomed the announcement that €640,000 is to be allocated to Downpatrick Head, Ballycastle. Downpatrick Head is listed as a discovery point on the Wild Atlantic Way tourist driving route. The allocation of money will improve visitor facilities here.
