Ring welcomes further approval for works at Rossow Bends

Fri, Dec 05, 2014

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring this week warmly welcomed the announcement by the National Roads Authority that further road works will take place on the N59 Rossow Bends at Kilmeena, Westport. The N59 Rossow Bends scheme, between Newport and Westport, is 1.8km in length and continues from the N59 Kilbride Scheme which was completed 2012. The Rossow Bends section is part of the overall N59 Westport to Mulranny Road Improvement Scheme.

Minister Ring said: “The existing road and junctions at Rossow are extremely deficient in cross section, alignment, and visibility. The Great Western Greenway runs close to and parallel to the N59 in this area and it crosses the N59 at-grade at this location, along a non-overtaking section of the road where visibility is deficient. The proposed road has type three single carriageway construction being constructed off-line, with a 2.5m wide cycleway alongside for 1.2km of its length. The scheme will remove the at-grade Greenway crossing at Kilmeena (replacing it with an underpass) and improve six existing side road junctions.

New CELTA course starting in the new year

Fri, Dec 05, 2014

Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), Teaching English as a foreign language, or TEFL, is a popular choice among graduates who want to go travelling or people wishing to change career. “There are many courses and it’s all a bit bewildering,” said Mary Grennan, director of International House Galway. “You need a course which is accepted by quality schools, such as the CELTA — it’s the most recognised ELT qualification in the world.”

Why is the CELTA so famous? “It’s been in existence since 1962, when it was written by the founder of IH, John Haycraft, and it’s now administered by the University of Cambridge,” Ms Grennan explained. The CELTA is accepted at the best language schools worldwide. “It’s amazing, there can’t be many courses where someone finishes up on a Friday and finds themselves teaching in Barcelona the following Monday, as happened recently to a CELTA trainee - and without a word of Spanish.”
