Kenny stands by ending of town councils

Just over a year from the biggest reorganisation of local government in the State in a lifetime, with the abolishment of town councils by the current Government and the setting up of new municipal authorities, the Taoiseach said this week that he stands by the decision.

Speaking to the local press at a briefing held in Lough Lannagh Holiday Village in Castlebar, when asked about how he had viewed the change over in systems, he said: "I think it takes a while for these things to bed down, they were pretty radical changes. It's all part of the restructuring of local government and overall government, the Dáil has been reduced and town councils were gone and municipal areas set up. As it goes on, they will find their feet and find their own level, but that takes a while. I have not heard too much criticism in fact."

Sod to be turned on National Outdoor Pursuits Academy

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said this week that he expects for the sod to be turned on phase one of the National Outdoor Pursuits Academy based in around Lough Lannagh in the coming weeks. The Taoiseach was speaking at the press briefing with local newspapers this week in Lough Lannagh Holiday Village where he outlined progress on a number of projects and developments in the county.

The Taoiseach said that it would be a wonderful facility for the town, he also spoke of issue of the new swimming pool that will be part of the campus not being a 50m pool saying there was "no realistic basis to the initial calls for a 50 metre facility".
