Probation act for man involved in night club assault

A man who was charged with assaulting another man in a Ballina night club was bound to the peace for 12 months at Ballina District Court by Judge Mary Devins. Gerard Langan, Tonroe, Kincon, Ballina received the benefit of the Probation Act in relation to the incident which occurred on February 10 last.
Martin Munnelly, the alleged injured party, told Judge Devins that he had a few drinks in Crossmolina on the night in question before going to Longnecks in Ballina. He was unable to recall anything of the incident other than before he was hit he had met up with some friends. He said he would have had about five or six drinks prior to going to Ballina.

A 40-year-old man who slapped a 14-year-old boy across the face after pushing his way into the kitchen of his home was ordered to pay €1,000 into a trust fund for the boy and his younger brother. Noel Killoran, Ballybeg, Kincon, Ballina received the benefit of Section 11A of the Probation Act on condition that he pay the money into a trust fund and also that he stay away from the home of the injured party.

Mayo County Walking Officer Anna Connor gave an in-depth presentation to the Planning and Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee of Mayo County Council. After outlining the steps being taken to turn Mayo into the walking capital of Ireland, Director of Services for the council Mr Joe Loftus told the members. “There is a difficult budget ahead which could have some implications for the walking strategy but I’m sure we can get through it.”

The long awaited new theatre forBallina is moving closer and an information night on the theatre will take place on Tuesday December 2 at 6pm in the Ballina civic offices. Currently the project has received funding of €1.62 million from Ballina Town Council, €1.59 million from Mayo County Council and €1.2 million from the department of Arts, Sports and Heritage subject to the shortfall in the project being made up by local contributions. The shortfall that will have to be raised through local fund-raising is expected to be in the region of €500,000.
