May VFI Good Neighbour of the Year announced

Bridie Cawley from Crossmolina has been chosen as the Mayo Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI ) Good Neighbour of the Year 2008.

Bridie was nominated by Cawley’s of Rakestreet in Ballina for her outstanding contribution to the local community over many years. She helped to organise many different events from card games and community meetings to dancing in the local community centre. Bridie died earlier this year.

Terry Cawley, customer of Cawley’s and no relation of Bridie, commented: “Bridie worked tirelessly, and mostly without recognition for and with the community. She was concerned for all who were sick, old, infirm or just needed a friend. She was one in a million.”

The VFI Good Neighbour Award, which is supported by Heineken, is now in its third year and runs in all counties outside Dublin. The aim is to recognise the unsung heroes who make a difference to the life of a friend or neighbour in their local community.

As part of the initiative, pub customers in participating VFI pubs throughout the country were invited to nominate someone in their local community who they believe deserves such recognition.

Later this month an overall winner will be selected from the county winners and named as the National VFI Good Neighbour of the Year 2008.
