The long awaited new theatre in Ballina got the go ahead to move to the tender stage this week, Ballina Town Council Mayor Michelle Mulherin revealed to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday. “The county manager has given the go ahead to let the project go ahead to the tender stage this week,” she said. “The tender documents have been prepared and will be advertised next week.”

St Pat’s housing refurbishment on track

Mayo County Council approved the raising of a €12.9 million loan for the provision of a 66 unit housing refurbishment scheme at St Patrick’s Estate, Ballina, by the Cluid housing association, during the council’s monthly meeting on Inishturk.

A Claremorris man who told Gardaí to “f**k off” and that they “didn’t give a f**k about him” when he was ordered to go home by a garda was ordered to pay €200 to charity by Judge Mary Devins for an ‘out of character’ incident.

Join Ballina’s record breaking high heel race for children’s hospital

Six hundred students, teachers — both male and female — parents, and members of the community of Ballina will don their high heels today, Friday, in an attempt to gain a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most entrants in a high heel race. Students have organised the race as part of Kellogg’s Jump for Joy Schools Challenge, which encourages students to get active while raising much needed funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The people of Ballina are being urged to strap on their high heels and get involved as a minimum of 1,000 participants are needed to break the existing record.

During Monday’s County Council meeting on Inishturk, Councillor Frank Chambers put forward a Notice of Motion that Mayo County Council introduce a policy in co-operation with oil suppliers to deal with the numerous oil spillages on our main and county roads.

Tributes paid to Castlebar councillors before they step down

The people of Carnacon paid special tribute to retiring Councillors Paddy McGuinness and Johnny Mee at the Castlebar electoral area meeting held in the village last Friday night. The area meeting was moved out of the county town to pay tribute to the Carnacon ladies’ GAA team who captured their third All-Ireland senior football last year. Walter Hughes from the Carnacon Community Council welcomed the members to the village saying: “It’s a rare and unique achievement for a rural area to see All-Ireland titles come our way. We are delighted to have such an occasion to recognise the achievements and the honour the girls brought to the area.”

Councillors pay tribute to former council official

The members of the committee paid tribute to the late Sean Dunleavy, who was a planning officer with Mayo County Council. Cllr Al McDonnell led the tributes, saying: “I found him a very strong and direct man. If he made his mind up that was it, he was very fair, though, and didn’t take long to make his mind up. He was able to give a very fair assessment of a situation very quickly.”

Johnny Mee is honoured as Castlebar’s first Freeman

For the first time in history the honorary freedom of Castlebar was bestowed on one of its greatest sons last night. Johnny Mee, who has served the town as a town and county councillor for over three decades, as well as through numerous voluntary organisations such as Western Care, was awarded the honour after he announced his retirement from politics earlier this year.

Mayo denied €2 million in wave funding

Labour’s Harry Barrett has hit out at the failure of Government to provide a €2 million grant aid package promised to the county for wave energy.

The Mayo Energy Audit 2009-2030 investigates how the county of Mayo might adapt to the challenge posed by fossil fuel depletion and global warming. It is intended to form the basis for a comprehensive strategic energy action plan for Mayo. The audit has examined all of Mayo’s renewable energy resources as well as considering the future role of fossil fuels. Conducted by the Sustainability Institute the audit states that wave energy will not develop significantly in Ireland “for at least a decade” due to investment difficulties and the “unproven nature” of the technology. The crux of the problem is demand. The energy audit clearly demonstrates the limitations of renewable sources of energy, even in a county like Mayo with good resources and a relatively low population.
