Westport loses by one point to Killarney in Tidy Towns

Minister for State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has congratulated Pamela Flanagan, chairperson of the Westport Tidy Towns Committee, and the committee itself, on the wonderful results for Westport in the Tidy Towns competition 2011. Westport just lost out to Killarney on being overall winner by one point.

Public urged to make submissions on Westport town and environs plan

Labour councillor Keith Martin is calling on Westport people to make submissions on the new town and environs plan before the closing date of September 14. The plan deals with Westport House, Knockranny/Colonel Woods, and Westport town and environs.

Cllr Martin says the public needs to be aware of what he calls “drastic and controversial” zonings proposed in the plan.

Loss of Gaeltacht jobs and services with closure of MFG

There was bad news for Gaeltacht regions in the county with the news on Thursday that Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta (MFG) will close. The partnership company, which was involved in implementing Gaeltacht schemes and grants and has offices in both Achill and Belmullet, employs a number of people in the region. Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta had been in existence for more than 20 years and played a key role in assisting many start-up organisations and companies in Gaeltacht regions in Mayo and across the country and employed 130 people nationally.

Castlebar Young Fine Gael will hold its first meeting following the summer break this Saturday. The new committee comprises Darragh Loftus (chairperson), Liam McHale (secretary), Shane Reilly (PRO), Aoibhinn Kenny (treasurer), Jack O’Donnell (vice-chairperson) and Michael Walsh (membership officer for North-West region), are keen to welcome new members between the ages of 15 and 30 to join.

Van owner and driver escape driving ban following accident

Fine for man who ‘goes on the tear now and again’

A Manulla man was given a €50 fine in Castlebar District Court this week after he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place. Garda Martin Friel told the court that on October 29 2010 at 11.20pm on Linenhall Street, Castlebar, he saw Noel Cunnane, Barris, Manulla, Castlebar, walking down the street in a intoxicated state. Cunnane slipped off the footpath and on to the street and when he picked himself back up he collided with a wall on the opposite side of the footpath.
